Royal Waste Services Deploys First Mack LR Electric Refuse Truck in Hunts Point

JAMAICA, NY – July 24, 2025 — Royal Waste Services is proud to announce the deployment of its first Mack LR Electric refuse truck in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the South Bronx, marking a major milestone in the company’s commitment to clean transportation and environmental leadership. This initiative is part of the broader “Bronx is Breathing” campaign and aligns with New York City’s ambitious Green Economy Action Plan and Hunts Point Forward strategy.
The delivery of the Mack LR Electric truck was made possible through a $10 million award from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to Volvo Group North America, supporting the introduction of zero-emission vehicles in underserved communities. Royal Waste is honored to be the first recipient of this cutting-edge electric refuse vehicle, which will serve routes in and around Hunts Point.
“Integrating this zero-emission Mack LR Electric into our fleet demonstrates that electric refuse collection can be both operationally effective and environmentally responsible," said Michael Angelo Reali, district manager for Royal Waste Services. “This partnership with Mack Trucks and the broader Bronx Is Breathing initiative allows us to serve the Hunts Point community while reducing our environmental footprint and supporting the transition to cleaner transportation solutions.”
This milestone coincides with the announcement by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and MN8 Energy to develop the city’s first freight-focused electric vehicle charging depot and a multi-purpose welcome center and workforce development hub at the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center. The facility will include over 50 EV charging stations for medium-, heavy-, and light-duty vehicles, and will serve as acritical piece of infrastructure to support the transition to clean freight operations.
The new 12,500-square-foot welcome center will feature:
- Shared community spaces
- Commercial retail and dining areas
- A workforce development hub with classrooms, employment services, and training facilities
Royal Waste applauds this investment in Hunts Point and looks forward to collaborating with city agencies, MN8 Energy, and local partners to ensure that the transition to clean energy also delivers economic opportunity, job training, and environmental justice for Bronx residents.
