The Future Of Composting And DSNY Bulk Pickup: Latest Updates

In response to the economic impact of COVID-19, city departments are already looking for ways to cut money from their budgets. One such cut was just announced by the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY). According to a department announcement, DSNY plans to suspend its curbside composting program, starting May 4, 2020, through June 30, 2021.

The suspension of the city’s composting program leaves the people of New York with no other alternative. If they wish to continue organic recycling, New York residents will have to secure private collection services for their food scraps and yard waste.

ROYAL WASTE’S COMPOSTING PROGRAM

Royal Waste has serviced large food wholesalers and environmentally conscious customers for quite some time. In fact, they were the first company in NYC to offer organic composting pickups. Royal Waste Services is the only commercial carter to have dedicated compost trucks in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.

HOW THE COMPOSTING PROGRAM WORKS

One of the most important aspects of food waste management is through education. Constantly educating our customers on what goes in the composting bin is crucial. Once they buy into the program, we then do on-site spot checks for contamination.

“In regard to organics, contamination definitely is a concern, which is the main reason we chose to make an investment in the Scott Turbo De-packager to ensure the material we pick up and process, is as pure and clean as possible.”   – John Reali, Co-Director of Sustainability for Royal Waste Services

Once the food scraps and organic waste are picked up by state-of-the-art compost trucks, the material is then moved to Royal Waste’s organic facility. There it passes through a de-packing machine, which removes any contaminants that might be present.

The clean, organic finished product is then loaded into trailers and transported to McEnroe Organic Farm in Millerton NY. It is there that the raw organic material is turned into organic compost for the farm and made available for purchase at retailers down the East Coast of the USA.

The food waste organic recycling program can reduce waste by up to 50%. Cost-efficient and effective, these methods divert waste from landfills and produce topsoil for organic farming. From farm to recycling and back to the farm, Royal Waste’s Organics Recycling program is a true closed-loop system.
